nope, it's not true. he was genuinely stupid and kept taking matchbooks from the hotel room he's was screwing the other guy's wife in. these days most hotels don't leave matches in the rooms for free because they have so few smoking rooms. but back in the 1990's when Conan is 'supposedly set in' they did. today, hotels don't want to encourage smokers to illegally smoke inside their non-smoking rooms by leaving free matches. plus he was just too stupid, if he'd left the matches behind he wouldn't have been found out. also, that hotel's too big, too expensive, and too popular to meet and screw somebody else's wife in when you're married yourself. especially if he's married to a celebrity. she's famous so some photographer is probably following them now and again hoping to get a juicy scandal.

I don't think her husband was faking the affair. In the episode, the lady said, "You think he wanted me to discover his affair?" and Eri said, "Yes". Also, the lady saw that he was eating dinner with the other wife.
